In attempting to pick the best free VPN service, it soon became clear that all had their drawbacks. Cyber. Ghost is our pick of the bunch. It can be slow to connect and the connection lasts only three hours before you have to manually re- connect.
If you don’t need a high- speed connection, though, in most other respects it’s a good free VPN which you can even use for watching video. Although impressive in other respects, you’re soon going to use up the free data allowance with either Private Tunnel or Tunnel Bear at which point you’ll be paying for the service, or uninstalling it. Of the genuinely free services, Spotflux Lite offers only servers in the US, and its speed wasn't the best.
Hotspot Shield tries to force you into buying a subscription service and by offering only a US- based server (and also by inundating you with advertising). Its aggressive use of advertising and changing your system software has led some security advisors to classify the program as malware. In fact, if watching video is your main concern, then check out our guide to watching US Netflix for more tips. But overall, and this may not the be news you wanted to hear, we'd recommend taking a look at our VPN chart for a cheap paid- for service that'll treat you much more kindly. The company has servers in the UK and the USA plus many European countries stretching east to as far as Russia and Ukraine. The free service offers access to 1.
Premium and Premium Plus ones allow users to choose from a range of 2. Cyber. Ghost assures us that it doesn't limit bandwidth for free users. There are some ways in which you’re disadvantaged with the free product. When you are connected, you’ll be logged out after three hours of browsing, for instance, although you can always try to login again immediately. Another restriction is that you can't use the i. Pad app with a free account. In order to use Cyber.
Ghost on an i. OS device, for example to watch i. Player from outside the UK, you'll need to have a premium account. Additionally the servers that allow P2.
P use are not available to free users. Speed wasn't a problem during our testing, with Speed. Test reporting 4. Mb/s. That's by no means the fastest, but it's enough for streaming Netflix in Super.
HD quality. Read on for more free VPN services, but if you're willing to pay for a better service look at our overall pick of the best VPNs 2. The free service gives you 5. MB per month although you can request an increase to 1.
GB via Twitter. Apparently, bear- related puns increase your chances of success. Beyond this you can pay either monthly or annually for unlimited data.
The download speed was reported as a respectable 1. Mb/s. Definitely one of the best free VPN services. This attracts no monthly fee although you are limited to just 1.
MB of data when you first try it. When you bear in mind that this would be considered a very small monthly allowance for a smartphone, you get an idea of how restrictive it will be, but this is more a limited demo to give a flavour of the service. After this trial you simply pay for the amount of data you need. There are prices for 5. GB, 1. 00. GB and 5.
GB. Because charging is based purely on data use, there is no limit on the number of devices you can use as there is with some free services. And importantly, there's no time limit within which to use the data. Currently you can choose a server from USA, Canada, UK, Netherland or Switzerland. While this is limited compared to some other VPN services, in practice it’ll be adequate for most British readers, whatever your reason for going the VPN route.
We measured a download throughput of around 1. Mb/s. This means that it’ll operate when you’re browsing, but not in other internet- related applications including Skype for which the VPN approach isn’t recommended.
As a result you don’t have to turn your VPN connection on and off as you switch between applications. There's also i. OS version of Spotflux, just as there is with Cyber. Ghost, that isn't accessible to users of this Lite version. When you first install Spotflux Lite, you get a three- day trial of the Premium service which additionally offers phishing protection and an ad- blocker. The company is offering servers only in the USA, although there is talk of other countries being made available later.
So, if security is your reason for considering a VPN then Spotflux Lite will do the trick. If you want to watch UK catch- up TV while you’re on holiday abroad, it won’t meet your needs.
The measured download speed was 6. Mb/s, which is average in our limited test, but still fast enough for most purposes. First, the free version is funded by advertising and although this isn’t uncommon, many users find that the display of advertisements in a web browser to be quite obtrusive.
Second and most importantly, although the company also has servers in the UK, Australia and Japan, as a free user you’re assigned to one of their US- based servers at random. This means that you can’t use it to access UK- only information while you’re abroad. Worse still, if you try to use it to access popular sites such as Hulu that are available only in the US, many such sites are blocked in the free service. However, there is no limit on data usage and the measured download speed was 6.
Mb/s. Note, though, that installing Hot. Spot Shield will also change your default search engine, as well as change the adverts you see to those now sent by your VPN sponsor. Unlike other browsers, this isn't an extension or add- on: it's part of the browser. And it really is free, so you're not limited on the amount of data you use per month and you won't have to pay for a subscription. At present it's only a beta version and the finished version will be available soon.
It means that you can only pick from US, Canada or Germany, but that's fine if you're in the UK and you want to access sites in the US. To use the feature you have to go to the O menu, then Settings, then Privacy & Security and toggle the free VPN on. Download the preview version of the browser here. The Best VPN Services and Apps of 2. Including Free Options) Why You Need a VPNCybercriminals, spies, overeager retailers and even internet service providers can watch your internet traffic to find out what you do online — but only if you let them. To stop them, consider using a virtual private network, or VPN, which creates a secure tunnel through the internet for your data. Everything you do will be unreadable by the rest of the internet until it reaches the VPN servers at the other end of the tunnel. Credit: Adobe Stock.
With hundreds of VPN services and clients available, it can be difficult to decide which to use. We extensively tested several popular VPN services that met three requirements: They had desktop and mobile client software, they had servers in many countries, and they offered unlimited data use, at least in their paid versions. Based on our performance tests and a comparison of features and pricing, Private Internet Access is the best overall VPN service. Of the services we tested, it's the best overall performer, has the most servers and is the cheapest full- fledged VPN service we reviewed, at $3. Both Private Internet Access and one of our two runners- up, IPVanish, are based in the United States, which may deter some customers who are trying to evade Uncle Sam. Our other runner- up, Cyber. Ghost, is based in Romania, which has strong privacy laws.
We installed each vendor's VPN client software on a Lenovo Think. Pad X1 Yoga notebook, an Apple Mac. Book Air, an i. Pad mini and an Android- based Samsung Galaxy S6 phone. We used all four devices with all VPN services. Using Wi- Fi on the X1 Yoga, we timed how long it took to connect to websites, measured latency times (how long it took a server to respond), and recorded upload and download speeds with Ookla's Speedtest meter, both with and without the VPN activated. We also saw how long it took to download a 4.
MB file of a 4. K video shot by NASA about the International Space Station, both with and without VPN activation. We measured how quickly a VPN service connected after we clicked the activation button. These readings, and those of the data speed and latency — how long it took to get a response from a destination server — were repeated three times and averaged. During each test run, we noted how many times (if any) we needed to re- establish the VPN link. We also used each VPN for a variety of more mundane things, such as receiving and sending email; retrieving, updating and saving Google Docs files; and playing a few online games. Features Compared. Max. The only downside is that you can't select your own username. Making Private Internet Access our VPN service of choice was almost a no- brainer, but anyone wary of the U. S. Unlike most other full- fledged VPN services, it's transparent about its company structure, with online profiles of all staffers, including the office cleaning lady. Privacy fanatics will like its Romanian location, and there's a decent free option. But Cyber. Ghost's full- service subscription is expensive. IPVanish wasn't the top performer in our tests, but it was one of the most reliable, connecting smoothly and staying connected every time we used it. It has a decent array of connection points and reasonable pricing, but its U.
S. But whereas most VPN services have a single license for all of a user's devices, Avast Secure. Line VPN charges you for each computer, plus extra for an i. OS or Android app, making it expensive for anyone with more than just a single laptop.
Opera VPN is really two different services. The free desktop version works only through the Opera web browser, and while it's very fast, it shouldn't be used for sensitive communications. But the mobile apps, also free to use, are full- fledged VPN services that perform decently and are perfect for occasional travelers who are seeking to avoid the risks of hotel and airport Wi- Fi networks. Like Avast, Avira got into the VPN business to complement its antivirus offerings.
Phantom VPN is easy to use and gives you up to 1. GB of data per month for free, making it ideal for vacation travelers who just need to check email. Its unlimited paid plans are reasonably priced, but it had slow downloads and dropped connections in our tests. Express. VPN has the largest range of client software available, a dedicated proxy service for streaming media and its own DNS service. But it dropped many connections, its overall performance was in the middle of the pack, it allows only three devices to be connected simultaneously per account and it's one of the most expensive services we evaluated. Nord. VPN is easy to set up and use, has more than 1,0.
But its performance was only so- so. Pure. VPN has servers in more than 1. It also lets you .
But Pure. VPN was at or near the back of the pack in almost all of our performance tests. What VPNs Do and Don't Do.
Using a VPN can make it look like you're someplace else. It's a well- worn practice to evade online censorship, as in China, or to tap into U. S. We've used VPNs to read the New York morning paper in Beijing and watch American TV in England. But there are some caveats. A VPN will give you more privacy, but not more security. If you end up on a website harboring malware, the VPN can't prevent you from being infected. If it isn't encrypted — and whether it is depends on the website you're connecting to — then the traffic might be intercepted and read.
If you just want to evade geographical restrictions on streaming content, such as BBC i. Player or Hulu, you don't need a VPN to do so. You just need a proxy service that will make it look like you're in the right country.
There are many free proxy services available, but do your homework before choosing one — some of them are a bit dodgy. Finally, Netflix is cracking down on both VPNs and proxy services. There's no guarantee that a particular service will evade Netflix's geographical restrictions on a particular day. Anyone eavesdropping on your Wi- Fi traffic in a caf. Credit: IPVanish VPNThe flip side is that a few of these full- featured services are pretty anonymous themselves, operating behind shell companies in offshore tax havens.
If you're trying to avoid government scrutiny, that's great, but you might have a hard time getting your money (or bitcoin) back in the event of a dispute with the VPN provider. Two other services — Avast Secure. Line and Avira Phantom VPN — are run by antivirus companies as complements to their primary business. These VPN services offer fewer features; are limited to Windows, Mac, i. OS and Android; don't work without client software; have a couple of dozen servers at most; and don't let you pay anonymously.
But the companies are known quantities, and the services are handy for occasional travelers. Finally, there's Opera VPN, which is completely free. The desktop version works only within the Opera web browser.
But the mobile apps, which are made by a different company, encrypt all the internet traffic to and from an i. OS or Android device. However, both the desktop and mobile versions of Opera VPN have servers in only five countries.
VPN Protocols. There are several different VPN protocols, not all of which are used by all of the VPN services we reviewed. Most operating systems have built- in support for at least one of these protocols, which means you can use it — and a VPN service that supports it — without client software. Most of the full- fledged VPN services have online instructions for how to do this, as well as how to set up routers to connect directly to the services.
Open. VPN: Open. VPN is very secure, open- source and widely used. Most VPN services support it, but except for Chrome OS, few operating systems do. Free Gold Xbox Live Membership on this page.
It can be used in either TCP (web) or UDP (streaming) mode; the latter is sloppier but faster. You'll need either the VPN service's client software or one of the many free alternatives. If properly implemented, the combination of the two is very secure. It has native support in Windows, OS X/mac. OS, Android, Chrome OS and i.
OS. Most VPN services support it. IKEv. 2 (Internet Key Exchange version 2, generally with IPsec): This is a newish standard that is very secure when properly implemented.
It has native support in Windows, i. OS and recent versions of OS X/mac. OS. SSTP (Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol): SSTP is a Microsoft protocol with native support on Windows Vista and later versions. It's thought to be quite secure, but only Microsoft knows for sure.
PPTP (Point- to- Point Tunneling Protocol): This standard is largely obsolete, with many known security flaws, but it's fast. It has native support built into Windows, Android and older versions of Mac OS X and i. OS; Apple dropped support with mac. OS Sierra and i. OS 1. Use PPTP only for streaming content, as it won't protect your data.
